Rethinking “Argument”
Most of us are used to thinking of argument as combat. This idea is coded in our language: we “defend our position” and “attack someone’s claim.” But the fact is that argument is how knowledge gets created. It’s war when it goes bad. When it goes well it’s exploration and discovery — of our own position and of someone else’s.
